As personal computing continues its migration to the mobile Internet, employees are beginning to demand mobility - starting with the ability to get work emails away from the office. And while companies may not have to buy every employee a smart phone, they are feeling the pressure to allow employees to use their personal devices for work.
Many CIOs are concerned about this trend, citing security, compliance and IT asset management issues. Yet Information Week reports that the train has already left the station, so companies need to get on board. Employers must give people mobile e-mail access -- or they will create it for themselves.
Vanguard, Inc., the mutual fund giant, is one of the latest firms to let employees use their smart phones for work. They use encryption with smart token authentication to keep mobile email activity safe. In the future, Vanguard expects to have a completely device independent computing strategy, using desktop virtualization.
